AROUND THESE ISLANDS
03 April 2019
In the past, the identity of these islands was defined by our maritime trading relationships with the world. What will define us in the future?
Amidst continuing Brexit uncertainty, These Islands is teaming up with yachtsman and social entrepreneur Jonathan Winter for a voyage of discovery around the UK and Ireland, pausing at twelve ports with historical or contemporary significance to ask: What part has it played in our history? And what does this place tell us about a positive vision for the future?
The voyage is a real one, a 2,500-mile journey in a boat called ‘Nova’, a new type of British-designed ocean cruising yacht. Through a series of articles and interviews with diverse thinkers and academics, supported by images and impressions from around the coast, we’ll explore the similarities and differences of towns, cities and regions of the UK and our nearest European neighbour.
Chosen for their historical or contemporary significance, and spaced at regular intervals (2-3 weeks apart over a voyage of six months), these twelve harbours are likely to form part of the itinerary for Nova’s 2,500 mile circumnavigation of the Great Britain and Ireland.
What does Dundee’s resurgence as a software hub teach us about talent and trade? How can the city of Bristol’s creative sector benefit the South West as a whole? What is the future of remote towns like Stromness in the connected digital economy? In 20 years will we still be seeing gas being shipped into Milford Haven? How can London’s economic power and diverse population best strengthen the whole of the UK?

“For me, this isn’t about Brexit, independence or nationalism. It’s not about a doctrine or philosophy. It is about focusing on a positive vision for the future – one that will bring people together and unite, not divide us. Without vision, we have nothing to unite around.”
– Jonathan Winter
“Following Jonathan on his voyage around these islands will allow us to explore the similarities that bind us, and to celebrate the differences that contribute to the richness of our unique union.”
– Kevin Hague
