14 August 2020
These Islands is pleased to announce the addition of two distinguished economists to its Advisory Council: Frances Cairncross and Professor Ronald MacDonald.
Frances Cairncross is a former journalist and economist who was brought up in Scotland. She was for 20 years a senior editor on The Economist magazine, and then Rector of Exeter College, Oxford. She has recently stepped down as Chair of Court at Heriot-Watt University, and is a trustee of the Natural History Museum.
On joining These Islands’ Advisory Council, Frances said:
“I have read with interest the thoughtful work that These Islands produces on the future of the United Kingdom, and am delighted to join their Advisory Council.”
Ronald MacDonald OBE is currently Professor of Macroeconomics and International Finance, and the former Adam Smith Professor of Political Economy, University of Glasgow. His research is published in the Economic professions’ leading journals and he has over 18,000 citations recorded on Google Scholar. Ronald has also acted as an adviser and consultant to several governments and public agencies, including the European Commission, General Secretariat for Development Planning, Qatar, the National Audit office, the World Bank and the IMF, and consistently ranks in the top 1% of the IDEAS/RePEc ranking of over 50,000 economists in the world.
Ronald provided this statement:
“These Islands brings formidable intellectual heft to the debate on how to forge a future for Britain that is to the benefit of all in these islands. This work has never been more important given Brexit and the resurgence of nationalism within Britain, and I am very pleased to join the These Islands Advisory Council at this crucial time and hopefully contribute to this important debate.”
